Look and feel your best, by knowing you’re using harmless and healthy color dyes.
When it comes to hair dye and hair coloring, we all want to do our part in both looking good and having healthy hair, all while trying to be as environmentally friendly as possible. More than just consuming the right nutrients, being a vegan can actually trickle into the products we put in our hair and place on our skin.
Below, we’re reviewing twenty of our favorite vegan and cruelty-free hair dyes to help guide all of us into the right direction when it comes to hair care.

5. Henna Hair Dyes by LUSH
More than colorful and themed bath bombs, LUSH also makes completely vegan henna hair dye. While many of the other dyes on our list come in explosive and bold colors, these dyes from LUSH come in four natural and earthy shades like Rouge, Noir, Marron, and Brun. Along with henna, these dyes also combine essential oils and cocoa butter for deep conditioning.
6. Henna Color Lab Hair Dye
Like LUSH, Henna Color Lab creates an assortment of beautiful and natural colors using henna hair dye instead of synthetic dyes as not only are they vegan, but higher and better quality for your hair. Located on the site, you’ll see how every dye reacts differently with the starting color. With a range from blonde, brunette, to black, each hair tone will see a similar but different end look.
(Henna Color Lab, $9.98)
7. Classic High Voltage Hair Color by Manic Panic Hair Dye

8. Naturtint Permanent Hair Color

9. Henna Cream Essential Kit by Surya Basil Beauty
What we love about this kit is that it’s put together to cover every basis you may have with the application of hair dye — in particular, vegan hair dye. The kit comes with three boxes of color (to promote touch-ups and consistency), application brush, mixing bowl, and an accessory of a free nail polish color that complements the color of your dye.
(Burya Brasil Beauty, $52)
10. EcoColors Non-Toxic Permanent Hair Color
Additionally being PPD Free, Gluten Free, Paraben Free, and Propylene Glycol Free, EcoColors promotes and encourages mixing their colors together to create an individual’s perfect shade.

12. Liquid Chalk by Brite
This liquid hair chalk works wonders on both blonde and brunettes (yes, finally, a product that shows color on darker toned hairs). There are six fun colors to choose from and wash out after one rinse. These make for great Halloween costumes, charity organizations (like the color run), and themed events.
13. Semi-Permanent Hair Color by Good Dye Young
If you love Paramore, you’ll love Good Dye Young — because it’s owned by the lead singer Hayley! These semi-permanent colors are loud, just like Hayley, and they smell of citrus as opposed to synthetic chemicals. Made of sunflower extract, bergamot essential oil, and quality cream-based ingredients, it’s safe to say you’re getting the highest quality products with the upside of being vegan and cruelty-free.
14. Semi-Permanent Hair Color From Lunar Tides
While both vegan and cruelty-free, Lunar Tides has a lovely bonus for color lovers! You don’t have to have bleached hair to apply their dye and have it show (which is a downside for many wannabe pink-haired people). Their formula not only applies over darker colors but won’t destroy your hair from synthetic chemicals. Lunar Tides also offers DIY ombre kits in multiple shades to really spike your festive game.
15. Herman’s Amazing Vegan Semi-Permanent Direct Color Dye
Why is it so hard to get salon-quality hair dye for home use? Herman’s Amazing thought the same thing and created their vegan and cruelty-free semi-permanent hair dye. In a wide variety of color, this dye contains no ammonia and is conditioner-based so you don’t have to worry about dry and unhealthy-looking hair.
16. Iroiro Premium Natural Semi-Permanent Hair Color
One of Iroiro’s prized aspects about its semi-permanent dye formula is that it is all-natural. Made from 100 percent organic coconut oil, natural yuzu-cranberry fragrance (thank goodness for a non-chemical smell) and other natural preservatives. As opposed to many other dyes, this color is cream-based so all you have to do is apply and massage in. For lighter colors, Iroiro recommends color lifting 10+ to get the desired (on the box) color end look.
17. Logona Hair Natural Vegan Plant-Based Dye
Who says that engineering and automobiles were the only products to buy from Germany? Logona, a German-based company, makes natural and vegan hair dyes that contain ingredients from the earth such as henna and plant colorants like beetroot and walnut shells.
18. Punky Semi-Permanent Conditioning Hair Color
Seemingly looking like a pint of Ben & Jerry’s, this vegan and paraben-free semi-permanent hair dye lasts up to 25 washes and comes in an assortment of fun and wild colors (like Punky spring green). What makes this dye so unique is the vegan keratin complex in the ingredients. This formula allows for enhanced and brighter color that lasts longer than many standard semi-permanent dyes.
19. Henna Hair Color by The Henna Guys
100 percent natural, 100 percent vegan, 100 percent cruelty-free — these are promises made by The Henna Guys. Coming in 11 earthy and natural hair colors, this formula claims to be pesticide-free without including any chemicals or metallic salts, creating a healthy environment for your hair. While this dye does not lighten your locks, it can be applied over already color-stripped hair to give a desired and off-the-box look!
20. Henna Cream by Tints Of Nature
Hints of Nature have taken wonderfully to the henna trend in hair dye. Keeping things vegan and natural, this formula promises to reach the core of your hair, giving it proper nourishment and conditioning, and leaving your new color with an included gloss (because who wants to pay double for both color and a gloss treatment?).
(Hints of Nature, $13.99)
